Academic Medical Centers

Academic medical centers represent a unique blend of hospital operations, scientific research, academia, and patient care. Accredited medical schools range from large public universities to small affiliated private colleges, from newly accredited colleges to universities founded before the American Revolution.

There are nearly 1,700 teaching hospitals in the United States. Of these, roughly 300 are considered to be major teaching hospitals, such as university hospitals or academic medical centers.

How ASHE membership can help facility professionals in academic medical centers

Changes in the health care industry have led to the need for academic medical centers and others in the health care field to operate more efficiently and more effectively. To assist with this, ASHE offers the following opportunities for facility managers in academic medical centers to reduce expenses and improve operations:

  • Commissioning: Health facility commissioning can help academic medical centers achieve its envisioned return on investment in facilities and equipment. Read the Health Facility Commissioning Guidelines or the Health Facility Commissioning Handbook.
  • Unified Codes: Reducing conflicts among the various codes and standards regulating health care facilities will allow hospitals to focus more of their valuable resources on patient care. ASHE is working with the International Code Council (ICC) to assess and amend the current ICC family of codes and ensure these requirements appropriately address the special safety risks that exist in hospitals and ambulatory surgery facilities. ASHE is seeking state and federal facilities to register as government members of the ICC. Leanr more about an ICC Governmental Membership or download an application.
  • ASHE membership: ASHE members-only resources can help. If you are not already a member, consider joining today for the latest tools and guidance needed to help your facility operate efficiently and effectively.
